Rapid Opiate Detoxification under Anaesthesia (RODA)

Western Canada Detox Centre provides Rapid Opiate Detoxification under Anaesthesia.

Rapid Opiate Detoxification under Anaesthesia is a means of withdrawing from opiates, like methadone, heroin, and prescription pain killers.  It is usually more comfortable, and quicker than other withdrawal methods. The procedure lasts about eight hours.

RODA is only part of a comprehensive addiction treatment program and should not be seen as a means of treating the underlying addiction itself. Rapid Opiate Detoxification under Anaesthesia is a service best provided to those for whom an inability or unwillingness to tolerate withdrawal symptoms is the only impediment to abstinence - based recovery. As such those seeking access to Rapid Opiate Detoxification under Anaesthesia must be actively engaged in a program of recovery prior to the procedure itself.

Western Canada Detox Centre is located in New Westminster, British Columbia.  To book a consultation, please visit our contact page.

An assessment is required prior to acceptance for Rapid Opiate Detox Under Anaesthesia. This will require 2-3 hours and includes a physical, blood work and a urine drug screen, a complete psycho-social history and drug use history. A written summary of this assessment, along with recommendations for recovery after the procedure, will be given to the patient and their family doctor. A medical history will be requested from patient’s family doctor and the family doctor will be contacted by Dr. Coleman to discuss the procedure and follow up treatment. If there are no concerns that must be addressed, the RODA procedure will then be schedule, usually within two weeks.

The patient from out of town will require two trips to Vancouver:

The first for the assessment, requiring a single day (may require an overnight stay if coming from far away);

The second trip for the RODA requires a stay of 7-8 days and patients must have a caregiver with them. Patient must arrive 3 days prior to begin pre-RODA medication. Both the caregiver and patient will meet with Dr. Coleman and then with the clinic manager for an hour appointment to sign releases, explain the process and what to expect and to answer any questions. After RODA patient should expect to stay a minimum of 3-4 days, returning to the clinic for one or more follow-up appointments before returning home.

The assessment and the RODA are not covered by MSP, however, some extended medical plans do cover it under addiction treatment. The cost for the assessment is $1500.00. The cost for the RODA is $5800.00. All other visits prior to and after the detox are covered by MSP.
